Different processes of herbal plants to prepare Ayurvedic medicines

The process of the separation of medicinally active particles or essence from inactive portions of Medicinal plants to  further pharmaceutical needs, with standard extraction procedures, The products obtained from raw medicinal plants will be an impure liquid, solids or powdered form, in this form we can use external application, but it couldn’t take internally, that’s why purification is needed. The basic  extraction techniques are Maceration, Infusion, digestion, Decoction, Percolation, the extracted tincture or oil or powder is obtained may be ready for use as a medicine.

Maceration:

 -Food preparation

The process of whole  or coarsely powdered crude drug is placed in a container with the solvent for a period of 3 days or more  in normal room temperature with frequent agitation until the soluble matter has dissolved  and  clarified the liquid by filtration is called Maceration.

Infusion:

 -Extracting chemical compounds  from plant and soluble in water, oil or alcohol.

The crude drugs keep in a short period of time with cold or boiling water. These are dilute solutions of the readily soluble constituent drugs.

Digestion:

This is a form of maceration in which gentle heat is used during the process of extraction. The solvent efficiency of the extract will be increased.

Decoction:

In this process, the crude drug is boiled in a specified volume of water for a defined time for a fixed ratio of quantity,( e.g. 1:4 or 1:8) this process in Ayurveda is called ‘Quath’ or ‘Kawath’, Malayalam-Kashayam, this process is called decoction.

Percolation:

The extraction  procedure with a specific apparatus to dissolve ingredients in the preparation of tinctures and fluid extracts.
